Hospital’s New LightSpeed CT Scanner Delivers Images Faster
ROME – Doctors will receive critical diagnostic information faster with the
installation of a new technologically advanced computed tomography (CT) scanner at Rome Memorial Hospital,
announced Mark D. Snyderman, assistant vice president of outpatient services.
With enhanced speed and accuracy, the new $900,000 LightSpeed CT scanner from GE
Medical Systems simultaneously captures multiple images of a patient’s anatomy to quickly diagnose a variety of
medical conditions for emergency and non-emergency patients of all ages.
"With LightSpeed, a CT exam that used to take three minutes can now be
completed in approximately 20 seconds, saving precious time in an emergency situation," said John R. Restivo,
MD, chairman of the Medical Imaging Department. "The new technology delivers sharper images, using less
radiation, and expands our diagnostic capabilities."
"The LightSpeed is so fast it can even capture images of the heart between
beats," Restivo said. "Its exceptional speed means patients don’t have to hold their breath as long as
with other CT systems, making every exam quicker and easier for the patients."
CT exams are used to detect disease or injury within the body and are commonly used
to view the spine, head, abdomen and chest. Originally developed in the 1970s, CT or "CAT" scans combine
the power of X-ray technology and computers, allowing physicians the ability to view wafer-thin cross-sections of
internal anatomy without the need for surgery.
Rome Memorial Hospital is the first hospital in Central New York to invest in the
new LightSpeed technology, according to Snyderman.
"Seven years ago, we were the first facility in Upstate New York to install GE’s
ProSpeed SX helical CT Scanner, which was the latest generation of imaging technology at the time," he said.
"At Rome Memorial Hospital, our commitment to the investment in technology is matched only by the dedication
of our staff."
The addition of the LightSpeed CT complements and extends the high range of quality
medical imaging services that Rome Memorial Hospital offers the residents of Rome and the surrounding communities.
At the hospital’s main campus at 1500 N. James St., the Medical Imaging
Department’s diagnostic capabilities include CT scans, general radiographic and fluoroscopic X-rays, nuclear
medicine, ultrasound, bone densitometry and mammography.
The hospital also provides general X-ray services at five off-site locations: 1617
N. James St. and Chestnut Commons, 107 E. Chestnut St., which also offer mammography services; 1801 Black River
Blvd.; 1819 Black River Blvd.; and 200 Spencer Ave., Sylvan Beach. |
