Rome Memorial Hospital Earns

An ‘A’ For Accreditation

ROME December 16, 2002 – Demonstrating its commitment to quality, Rome Memorial Hospital earned a score of 96 out of a possible 100 on its three-day evaluation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), announced Darlene A. Burns, president/chief executive officer.

“Only 16% of the 4,700-plus hospitals surveyed by JCAHO receive a score of 96 or better.  We are proud to be one of them,” Mrs. Burns said.  “This accomplishment reflects the ongoing commitment to excellence shared by our medical staff and our employees.  We have an excellent team of dedicated people who are committed to delivering quality health care services to our patients.”

The on-site inspection was conducted Dec. 4-6 by a team of four JCAHO surveyors, including a nurse, a physician, an administrator and a social worker.  The scoring measures how well the hospital performs against JCAHO’s 500-plus accreditation standards addressing safety and quality of care.

“Above all, the national standards are intended to stimulate continuous, systematic and organization-wide improvement in an organization’s performance and the outcomes of care,” said Russell P. Massaro, M.D., executive vice president, Accreditation Operations, Joint Commission.  “The community should be proud that Rome Memorial Hospital is focusing on the most challenging goal – to continuously raise quality and safety to higher levels.”

The hospital was awarded “accreditation with full standards compliance,” the highest level of accreditation. The three-year accreditation is awarded to hospitals that demonstrate compliance with applicable JCAHO standards in all performance areas.

“The surveyors were very complimentary of medical staff participation, our performance improvement initiatives and the leadership expected of and demonstrated by our department directors,” Mrs. Burns said. “At every level of our organization, they were able to see that we strive to meet JCAHO’s standards 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.”

An independent, not-for-profit organization, JCAHO is the nation’s oldest and largest health care accrediting body. Its mission is “to continuously improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of health care accreditation and related services that support performance improvement in health care organizations.”
