Testing and Treating the Body’s Critical Systems
Rome
Memorial Hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Services Department
provides a team of highly trained and skilled
professionals to care for the very specific needs of
patients with heart and breathing problems.
While the department’s home is on the hospital’s ground
floor, staff work side-by-side with other medical
professionals in every hospital unit. Inpatient services
are available around the clock with services provided on
an outpatient basis from
7 a.m. to
4 p.m.
Respiratory Care
We don’t breathe easier, until you do
Licensed respiratory therapists are highly trained to
assess the condition of your lungs and make treatment
recommendations to your physician. Some of the
diagnostic tools the therapists utilize are:
Although the therapists have the crucial role of
managing life support systems for the most critically
ill, they also perform respiratory therapy procedures
prescribed by physicians. They administer and monitor
breathing treatments such as:
-
oxygen
-
bronchodilators
-
chest physical therapy
The therapists also help patients learn to keep
themselves as healthy as possible through education.
Patients with asthma and lung disease are given
information to help understand and manage their
conditions.
The staff participate in the instruction of a number of
community education programs. This includes the
hospital’s smoking prevention program for elementary
school children.
Cardiodiagnostics
We don’t miss a beat
The Cardiopulmonary Services Department provides several
diagnostic services to detect heart abnormalities. These
include:
-
Electrocardiograms (ECG) -
a test that prints a record of the electrical
activity of the heart
-
Cardiac stress testing - a
test that evaluates heart fitness by using either
exercise or medication to see how the heart reacts
to doing hard work
-
Holter monitoring - a test
that provides a record of the electrical activity of
the heart over a 24-hr period
-
Echocardiograms - a test
that uses sound waves to produce, on videotapte, a
"motion" picture of the heart's muscles
Each diagnostic tool provides the information your
physician needs to determine the condition of the heart
and prescribe an appropriate course of treatment.
EEG
Make some waves, we’ll measure them
Electroencephalagrams (EEG), tests that measures
electrical impulses in the brain, are also available
through Cardiopulmonary Services. An EEG is used to
measure brain function and can detect abnormalities such
as epilepsy, stroke, or those following head injury.
