acute physical rehab
Helping
You Regain Your Independence
After a serious injury or
illness that robs you of your independence, it can seem
like life will never return to normal. The
simplest tasks like putting on your shoes or folding
clothes can seem impossible.
Rome Memorial Hospital
provides by comprehensive rehabilitative services in a
new 14-bed inpatient physical medicine rehabilitation
unit to help patients put their lives back together
again.
Rehabilitation involves
helping patients regain the greatest level of functional
independence possible after an injury or illness through
physical, occupational and speech therapy.
Our caring team develops
individualized treatment plans that combine
comprehensive therapy with the emotional support
patients need to reach their goals.
many
can benefit from rehabilitative services
Many of our patients come to
us after a stroke or having a hip replaced. Other
frequent diagnoses include spinal cord injury,
amputation, congenital deformity, major multiple trauma,
femur fracture, brain injury, polyarthritis,
neurological disorders including multiple sclorsis,
motor neuron diseases, polyneuropathy, muscular
dystrophy and Parkinson's disease.
An interdisciplinary
rehabilitation team will develop individualized
treatment plans, using a holistic approach that
addresses psychosocial and physical needs.
Patients receive a minimum of three hours of
rehabilitation a day for an average of 18 days.
The program focuses on abilities rather than
disabilities with the patient, family and staff as
partners in skill development.
A physician board certified in
physical medicine and rehabilitation serves as medical
director. In addition, the department has an
administrative program director and a nurse manager to
lead a staff of professionals including physical
therapists, occupational therapists, a speech/language
pathologist, a recreation therapist, a social worker, a
psychologist, and registered nurses.
renovated unit offers patient comforts
Opened in December 1998, the
rehabilitation unit was completely renovated to give
patients a comfortable environment. Private and
semi-private rooms are tastefully decorated and
residents eat their meals in a common dining room.
The unit has a kitchen and
laundry facilities so patients can learn adaptive
measures they can utilize when they return home.
the program doesn't end when you leave the hospital
Each patient will receive an
individualized plan to bridge the gap from inpatient
life to re-entry into the community. The plan can
include counseling sessions and continued physical,
occupational and speech therapy through outpatient
services. In addition, the unit offers a Stroke
Support Group and the Starting Now education program.
If you or a family member are
in need of rehabilitation, you can contact the program
director at (315)338-7600. All patients that are
referred to Rome Memorial Hospital's inpatient
rehabilitation unit are screened to determine if acute
rehabilitation services are appropriate for them.
