  • History of the Twigs first 100 years of service to Rome Memorial Hospital presented on new historical display

More than 100 years of Twigs history, as told in historical newspaper clippings, Twig journals and ledgers, and old photographs, has been preserved and presented on decorative wall panels now on display at Rome Memorial Hospital.

The Twigs, a fund raising and volunteer group, has supported the operation of the hospital since 1907.  From humble beginnings as a sewing circle, making items to sell to raise money for the hospital, the Twigs organization has changed and grown to keep up with the times.  Over the years, they have hosted an annual antique sale, run the hospital’s television and telephone rental service, waited tables in the hospital’s snack-bar, and continue to coordinate the annual Tree of Lights fund raising event.  The many members of the Twigs organization have played a vital role in the continued success of Rome’s community hospital.

“The Twigs are such an integral part of the Rome Memorial Hospital team,” said Basil Ariglio, hospital president/CEO.  “Their gifts of time and energy have strengthened the hospital through the years, and the money that they have raised has enabled us to buy essential equipment to serve our community.  When we preserved the history of the hospital on display panels unveiled during our 125th anniversary year, we knew that we wanted to create this same type of display to acknowledge all the good work the Twigs have done during their history.”

The Twigs display panels are mounted on the hallway wall to the left of the information desk at the hospital, across from the new location of the Twig’s gift shop.

“I am delighted to see this wonderful tribute to the Twigs organization,” said Marcia Murphy, Twigs president.  “This display is a nice recognition of all those women, past and present, who have given so much to support our hospital.  Today’s Twigs continue that tradition by serving the hospital in new and exciting ways, and we readily welcome any new members interested in volunteering their time.”

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Twigs may contact Murphy at 339-6728 or leave their name and phone number in the hospital gift shop.
