"Alternative treatments for knee arthritis" will be the focus of rome hospital's health night lecture

ROME –“Alternative Treatments for Knee Arthritis” will be the lecture presented by Orthopedic Surgeon Richard Mutty at Rome Memorial Hospital’s Health Night lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 7.  During the lecture, Dr. Mutty will present alternative treatments for arthritis of the knee, the most common form of arthritis.

“People are under the impression that if you have knee arthritis, you automatically need knee surgery,” said Dr. Mutty, who bicycles to keep his own knees limber.  “But there are many technologies today and alternative ways that arthritis of the knee can be managed and treated such as bracings, prescription and over the counter medications, changing diet, exercising, and local therapies.  During my lecture, I will present these alternative treatments to the audience and answer any questions they may have as well.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every three Americans (an estimated 70 million people) is affected by one of the more than 100 types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia. Symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, stiffness, and/or inflammation.  Arthritis is one of the most pervasive diseases in the United States and is the leading cause of disability.

For most people arthritis pain and inflammation cannot be avoided as the body ages. In fact, most people over the age of 50 show some signs of arthritis.  Joints naturally degenerate over time. Doctor’s detect arthritis through blood tests and x-rays.

Dr. Mutty completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, and Memorial University Newfoundland Teaching Hospitals.  He is board certified.  He received his doctorate from McGill University’s Facility of Medicine in Montreal and Quebec, Canada.

Dr. Mutty is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of the State of New York and the Oneida County Medical Society.

Dr. Mutty’s office is located at 1819 Black River Boulevard.

Health Night is a free monthly lecture series and will be held in the hospital’s classroom, located on the first floor.  Advance registration is not required. Refreshments will be served.
