new physiatrist joins rome memorial hospital
ROME
(September) - Richard R. Wayne, M.D., a board certified
specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, has
joined the medical staff of Rome Memorial Hospital.
He is in practice with Anne Mathews, M.D., and Chul Jo
Yang, M.D., the founder of Central New York Physiatry.
The physicians provide medical rehabilitation care for
Rome Memorial Hospital’s acute inpatient rehabilitation
program.
Accredited by
the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation
Facilities, the 14-bed rehabilitation unit helps
patients regain the greatest level of functional
independence possible through physical, occupational and
speech therapy. The individualized treatment plans
combine comprehensive therapy with emotional support to
help patients reach their goals after a debilitating
injury or illness, such as a stroke.
Because rehab is an intensive program involving at least
three hours of therapy a day, the physiatrist evaluates
patients to determine if they are good candidates for
acute rehabilitation. “We’re here to help patients
increase their functionality, but the recovery process
is 100% them,” he said, referring to the important role
patients play in their successful treatment.
Dr. Wayne earned his degree of medicine from the
Georgetown School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., and
completed his transitional year of residency at the
Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Fort Gordon, Ga. He
served seven years in the U.S. Army as a flight surgeon
for various airborne units and also was a physician for
the Connor Troop Medical Clinic at Fort Drum and for the
Department of Special Operations Medical Training at
Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas.
Dr. Wayne completed his residency in physical medicine
and rehabilitation at SUNY Upstate Medical University in
Syracuse, where he recently worked as an assistant
professor and attending physician. Dr. Wayne has a
special interest in electromyography and nerve
conduction studies, procedures used for the evaluation
of various neurologic disorders.
Central New York Physiatry has offices in
Rome
at 1617 N. James St., Suite 300, and in
Utica at 1675 Bennett St. Located on the fourth floor
of Rome Memorial Hospital, the 14-bed rehabilitation
unit was opened in 1998. Information regarding
admission to the rehab program may be obtained by
calling 338-7600.
