“Keep Your Smile Bright: Dental Health Issues for Seniors” focus of Hospital’s Senior Live & Learn Program

ROME – “Keep Your Smile Bright: Dental Health Issues for Seniors” will be the August topic of Rome Memorial Hospital’s monthly Senior Live & Learn program, a free educational outreach program designed for seniors.  Miranda Von Matt, BS, volunteer coordinator and community health educator, will present the program to the public on Thursday, August 12 at 12:30 p.m. at the Ava Dorfman Senior Civic Center in Rome.

The free program will also be offered to residents at the following locations:

  • Georgian Arms Apartments at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, August 2

  • Rome Mall Apartments at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 10

  • Valentine Apartments at 1:30 p.m. Monday, August 16

  • Colonial I and II Apartments at 1:30 p.m. Monday, August 30

“Today’s seniors want to stay healthy and look good,” said Von Matt.  “Exercise, eating right and having regular physicals help, but seniors can also enhance their overall well-being by taking good care of their teeth and gums,” she added.

Von Matt will discuss oral-health problems that can occur as one ages, how to prevent oral health problems, how side effects from prescription drugs can affect oral health, how health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer can affect oral health, and recommendations for long-term denture wearers.

“As with other health care issues, prevention is the key,” said Von Matt.  “Regular brushing and flossing is the best defense when it comes to maintaining oral hygiene and health.”

Pre-registration is not required to attend the program.
