Rome
Memorial Hospital welcomes
Director of Speech Therapy
ROME
– Manon Gouse, MS, CCC-SLP has been named director of speech
therapy at Rome Memorial Hospital. Gouse is responsible for
directing the hospital’s speech-language services for
hospitalized patients in acute care units, residents of the
skilled nursing facility, and adults who need outpatient
rehabilitation speech therapy.
“Manon has worked with people of all ages and brings a wide
range of experience to our speech-language department,” said
Mark Snyderman, Rome Memorial Hospital’s vice president of
planning/outpatient services. “Her interdisciplinary approach
to patient care makes her an excellent person to lead our
rehabilitation team.”
Gouse is one of three
speech-language pathologists in the hospital’s Speech Therapy
Department, which provides evaluation and treatment services to
patients with communication, cognitive, and swallowing
disorders.
“Speech therapists help patients
work through a variety of speech and language disorders, such as
problems with articulation or language comprehension. We also
work with patients to alleviate swallowing problems and enhance
cognitive skills after a stroke or a head injury,” Gouse said.
“It is very rewarding to help patients regain a skill they have
lost through a neurological disease or an injury.”
“My
role as director of Rome Memorial Hospital’s speech-language
services is to provide a voice for the department and our
patients,” Gouse explained.
“I
believe in evidence-based practices and providing high quality
services to our patients and families. When physicians, nurses,
aides, speech pathologists, families and caregivers work closely
together we are able to best address our patients’ needs,” she
added.
Gouse’s recent speech-language
research has been published in the professional periodicals,
Laryngoscope and
Folia Phoniatrica et
Logopaedica.
She graduated with her bachelor of
science degree in Hearing and Speech Sciences from the
University of Utah, Salt Lake City in 2002 and earned her master
of science in Speech-Language Pathology in 2004.
After completing an additional
nine-month clinical fellowship, she qualified for her
certificate of clinical competence (CCC) from the American
Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Gouse began her professional
career in speech therapy in the Granite School District, Salt
Lake City, Utah. She assisted in implementing individual and
group therapy sessions for children with developmental
disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy and Down’s
Syndrome.
Before joining Rome Memorial
Hospital, Gouse was employed at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare in
Utica. She served as their speech-language pathologist from
2004 until present concentrating primarily in acute care
including clinical bedside swallow evaluations,
videofluoroscopic swallow studies, and speech-language
evaluations. She conducted outpatient speech, language, and
voice evaluations and therapy for adult and pediatric patients.
“I chose to leave a job I was
happy with to come to Rome because so many people expressed
their satisfaction with Rome Memorial Hospital.” Gouse said.
“The support the rehabilitation team receives from management is
remarkable.
“There are great opportunities at
Rome Memorial Hospital. In the speech therapy department we are
working together to develop and facilitate new programs and
enhance current services,” she noted. “We have a strong
department with the people and resources to make it all happen.”
A native of Salt Lake City, Utah,
Gouse resides in Poland, NY with her husband, Ron, and their two
daughters. They appreciate the natural surroundings of the
Adirondacks and enjoy family time canoeing, hiking, skiing and
snowboarding.
