The Rome Family Y and Rome Memorial Hospital Present “Wellness Expo ‘06” ROME – The Rome Family Y and Rome Memorial Hospital are partnering to present “Wellness Expo ’06” featuring free screenings, valuable healthcare information, and demonstrations on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006 at the Rome Family YMCA, 301 W. Bloomfield St., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. “This is a collaboration of healthcare agencies and organizations to promote health and wellness within our community,” said Gary Fahey, vice president of membership services for the YMCA of the Greater Tri-Valley. “The expo builds upon our annual membership drive to raise awareness about the importance of protecting your good health. The Rome Family Y can play a key role in helping families live a healthier lifestyle.” Nationally, the YMCA is partnering with the America on the Move Foundation to empower individuals to take control of their health by making and sustaining small measurable changes to their daily eating and activity routines. “Our emphasis this year is on adult health which reflects our partnership with the America on the Move Foundation,” said Fahey. “We really want to encourage adults to make changes in their lifestyle which, over time, result in better health.” Fahey also noted that the YMCA holds a children’s health expo annually. As part of its annual membership drive, the Rome Family Y will be waiving the $75 joiner’s fee for those who register as members Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. Tours will be available to showcase the Family Y’s facilities, including swimming, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, aerobics, weight training, cardiovascular training and other programs. Rome Memorial Hospital will offer several free screenings during the event, including blood pressure and total cholesterol. The hospital will also provide information on good nutrition, healthy lifestyles and smoking cessation. There will also be chiropractic screenings and fitness and yoga demonstrations. Information will be available on numerous healthcare topics including senior exercise, Reiki and Tai Chi, and osteoporosis. Free massages will be available. The YMCA’s cardio equipment and the climbing wall will be available for use. Other organizations participating in the event and offering information or screenings include the the American Heart Association, the Oneida County Health Department and Fidelis Care NY. The Expo is being co-sponsored by Rome Historical Society. Healthy, free refreshments will be served. Free drawings will be held throughout the Expo. The team that is coordinating Wellness Expo ’06 is comprised of Fahey; Membership Director Nikki Boardman; Vice President of Activate America and Youth and Family Services Bruce Hairston; Health Fitness Youth and Family Director Michelle Grifasi; Vice President of School Age Child Care Amy Campanaro; Rome Memorial Hospital Community Educator and Volunteer Coordinator Julie Chrysler; Rome Memorial Hospital Director of Education Gale Barone; and Rome Memorial Hospital Assistant Director of Public Relations Ann Walseman.
