Learn about Type 2 Diabetes at November Health Night

ROME –It is estimated that more than 11 million people each year are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and many more are not aware that they have a problem.

In recognition of American Diabetes Month, Rome Memorial Hospital’s patient and staff educator, Mary Rose Spellicy, will present an overview of type 2 diabetes on Thursday, Nov. 2, 7:00 p.m. at the hospital’s Health Night.  The free lecture will be held in the new modular classroom located near the Bartlett Wing parking lot.

“Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the disease.  The insulin resistant disease is on the rise in our community due to an increased number of seniors and greater prevalence of obesity and sedentary lifestyles,” said Spellicy.

Over time, diabetes can cause changes in blood vessels or nerves that can affect many different parts of the body.  Diabetics are at higher risk for heart disease, stroke, amputation, vision problems, kidney disease, skin disorders, and gum disease.

“November’s Health Night will help people recognize the symptoms of type 2 diabetes,” Spellicy explained.

The presentation will include information on early detection, management of the disease with proper nutrition, weight loss and exercise, controlling blood sugar and regular medical checkups.

Health Night is a monthly lecture series, sponsored by Rome Memorial Hospital.  Advance registration is not required.  Refreshments will be served.

The new modular classroom is a grey building located on the Black River Boulevard side of the hospital. Please enter from East Oak Street and park in the Bartlett Wing parking lot.

Because of the importance of this topic and the prevalence of the disease, “An Overview of Type 2 Diabetes” will also be the topic of Rome Memorial Hospital’s Live & Learn program at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Ava Dorfman Senior Citizen Civic Center, 305 East Locust St.
