Physicians discuss imaging techniques for early detection of breast cancer at hospital’s Health Night

ROME - Two physicians on Rome Memorial Hospital’s medical staff will provide breast cancer information at its Health Night lecture 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7.

The free lecture, “Current Imaging Techniques for Early Detection and Evaluation of Breast Cancer,” will be held in the hospital’s classroom.  The speakers will be radiologist John Restivo, MD and surgeon Shuban Moza, MD.

“Medicine has made great strides in reducing the number of deaths caused by breast cancer through early detection and improved treatment options,” said Rome Memorial Hospital Director of Education Gale Barone, B.S., R.N.  “However, many women let fear get in the way.”

The American Cancer Society’s guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer are:

  • an annual mammogram for women 40 and over;

  • a clinical breast exam by a health professional every three years for women ages 20 to 39; and annually for women 40 and over; and

  • breast self-examination every month for all women age 20 and over.

“We are pleased to bring these physicians together for this month’s Health Night,” Barone said.  “Our physicians will discuss the importance of early detection using new imaging studies, in particular MRI of the breast.”

Dr. Restivo completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at Tufts/New England Medical Center in 1995. Board certified by the American Board of Radiology, he is the medical director of the hospital’s Medical Imaging Department.  Mammography and ultrasound are two of the diagnostic tools used by radiologists to detect breast cancer.

Dr. Moza completed his surgical residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, in New York City.  He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and clinical assistant professor at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse.

Health Night is a monthly lecture series, sponsored by Rome Memorial Hospital.  Advance registration is not required. Refreshments will be served.
