2006 Press Releases
Hospital hosts M.A.S.H. Camp for students interested in health care careers Scrub up! Students entering eighth or ninth grade in fall 2006 who are interested in exploring a career in healthcare are invited to apply for M.A.S.H. (Medical Academy of Science and Health) Camp to be held at Rome Memorial Hospital August 10 – 11. The two-day camp will expose students to a wide variety of healthcare professions such as medical imaging, physical and occupational therapy, pharmacy and nursing. “The campers will have the opportunity to meet health care workers, discuss what they do and see them in action, in addition to participating in hands-on activities,” explained Rome Memorial Hospital Director of Education Gale Barone, B.S., R.N. Every student will be provided with a set of hospital scrubs. “Today there are plenty of job choices for young people, but that often means choosing between a high-tech environment and working with people. Healthcare is unique because it offers both worlds. We are eager to help young people become familiar with the broad range of opportunities that healthcare offers because there is tremendous need for more people to choose these challenging and rewarding career fields,” Mrs. Barone said. Applicants are required to complete an application form and write an original, thoughtful essay explaining why they are interested in attending. The application also asks for a recommendation from a guidance counselor or teacher. Student selections are based on interest in science, math or the health professions, not academic performance. Applications are currently available at the Strough Middle School and Rome Catholic School guidance offices. Additional applications will be mailed upon request by contacting Rome Hospital’s Education Department, (315) 338-7062, or by e-mailing Ms. Barone at gbarone@romehosp.org. Students entering eighth and ninth grades who reside in Central New York are eligible to apply. Completed applications must be submitted no later than Friday, July 7, to Gale Barone, Director of Education, Rome Memorial Hospital, 1500 N. James Street, Rome, NY 13440. The 2006 M.A.S.H. Camp is sponsored by Rome Memorial Hospital, Excellus Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Central New York Area Health Education Center. |
