“Brown Bag Medication Workshop” to be held

ROME – “Medication Reconciliation” will be the April topic of Rome Memorial Hospital’s monthly Senior Live & Learn program, a free educational outreach program designed for seniors.  The program will be presented on Thursday, April 13th at 12:30 p.m. at the Ava Dorfman Senior Citizens Civic Center, Locust Street, Rome.   Rome Memorial Hospital’s Pharmacy Director Kathleen Lee, RPH, will present the program to the public.

Participants are invited to bring their medications, including prescriptions and any over-the-counter medications and herbal remedies, to the brown bag medication workshop said Lee, a licensed pharmacist. The workshop will start with a 10-minute overview followed by the medication review.

“Patient safety is our number one goal,” said Lee.  “When there’s not a single professional that is aware of all of the medications a person is taking, there is the potential for drug interactions and medication errors,” she said.

Lee said that people usually don’t inform their doctor or their pharmacist if they’ve started taking herbs or an over-the-counter medication.  “Some people also use multiple pharmacies for their prescriptions,” said Lee.

Lee will help identify outdated drugs and potential drug interactions.  She will also address side-effects, drug warnings, and the importance of taking medications as directed.  She will also help participants understand why they’ve been prescribed a medication if they’re unsure of its usage.

“Please bring medications in their original containers, if you have them,” Lee said.  “If you don’t have the original container, still bring them so we can ensure that they are correctly identified.”

Pre-registration is not required to attend the program.
