Emergency Department nurse earns certification Julie King, R.N., an Emergency Department nurse at Rome Memorial Hospital, has earned national recognition as a certified emergency nurse, announced Kathleen O’Rourke, director of the Emergency Department. To attain certification, King passed the “Certified Emergency Nurse” examination administered by the National Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing. “The CEN credential is a confirmation of Julie’s commitment to quality state-of-the-art emergency care,” O’Rourke said. “It is a challenging exam and I am very proud of her and her accomplishment.” Emergency nursing incorporates a wide spectrum of patient care that requires highly specialized skills and extensive knowledge, as well as the unique ability to care for all ages of patients who have illnesses or injuries ranging from the very minor to life-threatening. The CEN examination evaluates the nurse’s knowledge in the areas of clinical pathophysiology, patient care management, and professional issues, environment, toxicology, shock, trauma, and medical emergency care. King said she enjoys working in the Emergency Department because she’s on the front lines helping to stabilize patients who need immediate attention. She pursued the CEN credential because “credentialing is an acknowledgement of your skills and knowledge.” King joined Rome Memorial Hospital in June of 1991, previously working for the Veterans’ Administration Hospitals in Buffalo and Syracuse. She worked as a licensed practical nurse for 26 years before returning to school to become a registered nurse. She earned her associate’s degree in nursing from Excelsior College, Albany. |
