Stroke Support Group seeks members

After surviving a stroke, survivors and their families often turn to a support group to help them overcome common challenges and move forward after the stroke.

Rome Memorial Hospital’s Acute Rehabilitation Program is seeking stroke survivors and their families who are interested in forming a stroke support group.

“Some of our patients from the rehab program have expressed an interest in a support group to help them learn more about stroke, share their experiences and encourage one another,” said group coordinator Robert Hartnett, L.P.N.

“A stroke can be very isolating.  A stroke support group can be a place for stroke survivors and caregivers to make friends, socialize, gain realistic feedback, and share information about community resources,” Hartnett said.  “It’s a friendly and comfortable place to talk among people who know what you’re going through.”

Hartnett will be setting a regular schedule for the group once he assesses the best day and time for those who are interested in meeting.  Anyone interested in participating may contact Hartnett or any of the rehab program’s nursing staff or therapists at 338-7600.

Accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, Rome Memorial Hospital’s 14-bed rehabilitation unit helps patients regain the greatest level of functional independence possible through physical, occupational, recreational and speech therapy and rehabilitation nursing.  The individualized treatment plans combine comprehensive therapy with emotional support to help patients reach their goals after a debilitating injury or illness, such as a stroke.
