“Treating Heartburn” focus of Hospital’s
Senior Live & Learn program
ROME - “Treating Heartburn” will be the December topic of Rome Memorial Hospital’s monthly Senior Live & Learn program, a free educational outreach program designed for seniors.
Gale Barone, RN, BS, director of education at Rome Memorial Hospital, will present the program at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14 at the Ava Dorfman Senior Citizens Civic Center, 305 E. Locust St.
According to the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), heartburn is the most common symptom of a condition called gastroesophageal reflux or acid reflux. Ten percent of the population experiences heartburn and reflux symptoms at least once a week. The AGA notes that although rarely life threatening, heartburn and acid reflux may lead to further complications.
Barone will discuss the causes of heartburn, prevention and treatment.
“The first step towards prevention is identifying foods and behavior that may trigger symptoms,” said Barone. “If you do have heartburn, there are steps that can be taken to relieve the discomfort.”
“Live and Learn” is open to the public. Pre-registration is not required.
