The Rome Family Y and Rome Memorial Hospital Present “Wellness Expo ‘05” ROME – The Rome Family Y and Rome Memorial Hospital are partnering to present “Wellness Expo ’05” featuring free screenings, valuable healthcare information, demonstrations and guest speakers on Saturday, Oct.1, 2005 at the Rome Family YMCA, 301 W. Bloomfield St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “This is a collaboration between agencies to promote health and wellness within our community,” said Gary Fahey, vice president of membership services for the YMCA of the Greater Tri-Valley. “The expo builds upon our annual membership drive to raise awareness about the importance of protecting your good health. The Rome Family Y can play a key role in helping families live a healthier lifestyle.” As part of its annual membership drive, the Rome Family Y will be waiving the $75 joiner’s fee for those who register as members Oct. 1 and 2. Tours will be available to showcase the Family Y’s facilities, including swimming, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, aerobics, weight training, cardiovascular training and other programs. Rome Memorial Hospital will offer several free screenings during the event, including blood pressure, total cholesterol, depression and body fat analysis. The hospital will also offer information on: § chemical dependency, presented by the hospital’s Community Recovery Center; § cancer treatment options, presented by Mohawk Valley Radiation Medicine; § acute rehabilitation medicine, presented by the hospital’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit; § good nutrition and healthy lifestyles, and; § The “Speak Up” campaign which encourages individuals to talk to their healthcare provider. There will also be chiropractic and eye test screenings and fitness and yoga demonstrations. Information will be available on numerous healthcare topics including senior exercise, Reiki and Tai Chi, advanced directives and organ donations, mammography and breast cancer, osteoporosis, child obesity and AED usage. Other organizations participating in the event and offering information or screenings include the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, the Oneida County Health Department and Fidelis Care NY. Speakers will include Ralph Santarsiero, a YMCA certified personal trainer, and Reiki Master Marianne Crouse, RN, MS. Santarsiero is certified as a lifestyle and weight management consultant by the American Council on Exercise. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Scranton, PA and a master’s degree from SUNY Cortland. He is the head instructor of the Wellness Center, Rome Family YMCA. A retired teacher, he is an adjunct faculty member at SUNY IT. Crouse, an experienced nurse, educator, and owner of Healthy Vibrations, is a Reiki Master, a teacher and practitioner of Heart and Soul Healing and Ama Deus Healing. She is also certified in Color and Sound Healing. The Expo is being co-sponsored by Time Warner Cable. Healthy refreshments will be served. Free drawings will be held hourly.
