Midwife calls Mohawk Valley home

When Corinne D. Amodio, CNM, was a senior in the New Visions career exploration program, she had an opportunity to shadow certified nurse midwife Betty Guisinger, CNM, NP.  Today, the Whitesboro native works side by side with her as a certified nurse midwife at Mohawk Valley Women’s Health Associates.

“I always wanted to be a nurse midwife,” Amodio said.  “When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to meet and shadow Betty.  I told her then that someday I wanted to deliver babies.  The whole continuum of women’s health care was fascinating to me.”

“I feel an overwhelming sense of joy when I see a woman’s face light up because she’s just heard the sound of her baby’s heartbeat for the first time,” Amodio said.  “It’s amazing to be able to share in the miracle of birth.”

Since earning her master’s degree in nurse midwifery from Stony Brook University in 2004, she has delivered more than 140 babies at Rome Memorial Hospital.  She is also trained to provide medical care to women from adolescence through maturity.  “Many women don’t realize that midwives are also qualified to care for them throughout their lifespan, not just during pregnancy.”

Amodio grew up in Whitesboro with hopes of being able to call the Mohawk Valley home when she completed her education.  She graduated from St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing in 2000 and worked in labor and delivery at St. Luke’s Hospital before she returned to school to earn her bachelor’s degree in nursing and her master’s degree in nurse midwifery.

“It was important to me to be able to live near family and work in a practice with other midwives,” Amodio said.  “Mohawk Valley Women’s Health Associates has more midwives than any other OB/GYN practice in the Mohawk Valley.”

Mohawk Valley Women’s Health Associates has four midwives, Amodio, Guisinger, Marianne L. Stalteri, CNM/NP, and JoAnn M. Roberts, CNM/NP, and three physicians, who are board certified in obstetrics and gynecology – Ankur Desai, M.D., Lauren Giustra, M.D., and Anthony Dardano, M.D.  With offices located at 107 E. Chestnut St. in Rome and 1 Paris Road in New Hartford, the practice attracts women from Oneida, Madison and Herkimer counties.

“A practice with midwives is able to offer women the best of both worlds,” Amodio said. “Midwives and physicians may have a little bit of a different approach because midwifery is based on a nursing model, where as physician training is a medical model.  But, we all share the same common goal.  We strive to provide the very best in care.”

“For women of every age, the most important thing they can do to protect their health is to make regular exams a priority,” she said.  “Through these routine visits, we blend education, prevention and early detection to empower women to be partners in their own healthcare.”

In addition to routine gynecological and prenatal care, the providers at Mohawk Valley Women’s Health Associates specialize in infertility management and menopausal care.  The practice is accepting new patients.  For more information please call 334-9663 in Rome or 797-8661 in New Hartford.
