Rome Memorial Hospital’s Health Night Lecture

to focus on Vitamins & Herbals and their Benefits & Risks

ROME –Rome Memorial Hospital Pharmacist Dawn Cimo-Hewitt, RPH, will present “An Overview of Vitamins and Herbals” at the hospital’s Health Night lecture on Thursday, April 7, at 7 p.m. in the hospital classroom.

“The purpose of the lecture is to provide the community with general guidelines on vitamin and herbal use as well as their benefits and risks,” said Cimo-Hewitt, who has 16 years experience in pharmacy.

“As we know, we all need vitamins for the body to work, grow, and develop properly,” she said.  “Vitamins can help ward off disease, boost immune system response, and even improve overall moods.”

Cimo-Hewitt said that during the lecture she will also discuss the interaction between certain medicines and dietary supplements, including vitamins and herbals.  “It’s important to understand both the benefits and the potential dangers, including negative reactions, overdose, and even interactions that lessen the effectiveness of important medications,” she said.

To facilitate the discussion, Cimo-Hewitt is providing a guideline to all participants listing various vitamins and herbals, their uses, benefits and risks.  “Not all vitamins are created equal, so it’s important to know what to look for when purchasing them,” she said.

“Speaking about vitamins and herbals is a subject dear to my heart.  I was ill a few years ago and learned even more about them at that time which broadened my understanding,” said Cimo-Hewitt.  A graduate of Albany School of Pharmacy, she has been employed at Rome Memorial Hospital for five years.

Health Night is a free monthly lecture series.  No advance registration is required.  Refreshments will be served.
