understanding your bill

Many people do not realize that there may be several separate bills for care received during a hospital stay.  The hospital will issue you a bill for its services.  Physicians will send you separate bills for services they provided during your stay.

The hospital’s bill for an inpatient stay covers:

o     the room

o     24-hour nursing care

o     all meals, snacks and beverages

o     linens

o     medical supplies

o     medications

o     diagnostic testing

o     medical treatments

In addition, you may receive separate bills from:

o     your primary care physician

o     emergency department physician if you were treated there first

o     radiologist who read your x-rays

o     pathologist who examined blood or tissue specimens

o     surgeon

o     anesthesiologist

o     physician consultants
